Add a little excitement to your next toilet trip with these strange public bathrooms!

The bathroom is a sanctuary of sorts when on the road and travelling around the world and sometimes trying to find a toilet when you are really desperate can be an absolute nightmare. Toilets in that respect are like buses because when you really need one they’re nowhere to be seen. But just how far are you willing to go in order to find a suitable toilet?

When I was living in Thailand, on the road you would often come across dingy public toilets that were simply a filthy hole in the ground which would generally require manual flushing. As disgusting as that may sound to most people, I didn’t mind it all that much; for me it kind of added to the adventure. However, I know that for many people there is no bowl, quite like their home-bowl and they would never in a million years go anywhere near a portable outhouse; let alone a dirty hole.

The above image stands as evidence that you should never pass up on the opportunity to use a portable toilet because you never know what you’re going to find when you open the door! OK so 99% of the time you are going to find a pokey little toilet that is likely to be filthy from top to bottom and somewhat, incredibly smelly. This Jungle Jim’s bathroom in the US is actually a very well-maintained public toilet that is disguised as an outhouse. How many people do you think overlooked this toilet when they were in dire need of relieving themselves? Too many, I’d wager.

Check out this rather strange public toilet! For some bizarre reason somebody thought it was a great idea to design a public toilet that gives you a full 360 degree view of the surrounding street while you go to the toilet, while being entirely concealed from the outside. We have see transparent bathroom basins but a fully transparent Bathroom is quite a few steps further – whoever the person is I’d like to thank them; it is brave and creative souls such as them that make going to the toilet in public all the more exciting. Imagine being able to people watch while you’re going for a poo?  It will give you a moment of respite from your mobile phone and give you some quality time to sit and reflect on the world. (Pun intended)

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, somebody turns around and invents a toilet with a fishbowl for a cistern! Public bathrooms have always been a fascinating thing. In the western world we have become ashamed and embarrassed by our bodily functions and are obsessed with our privacy. Interestingly you can travel to India and you’ll find a group of men in the bathroom casually going for a poo right next to one another. We’d argue that their bathrooms are weird and yet we’re the ones with urinals fashioned like open mouths…
