As your child makes the transition from the crib to crawling to walking, there are a number of changes you’ll have to make to your child’s room. No longer a nursery for the baby to sleep in, you now need to turn it into an interactive environment for he or she to spend time in – playing, sleeping or enjoying various activities.
The space will become cluttered in a hurry, and due to your child’s newfound mobility it puts their safety at risk.
Today, we take a look at how you can combine organisation and safety in your toddler’s redesigned room.
Invest in Sturdy Furniture
While keeping the room clutter-free by installing storage units into the toddler’s room is key. You need to ensure that the furniture can withstand a baby climbing all over it because furniture such as bookcases could fall onto them. To reduce the risk of accidents, look into buying furniture wall straps or other similar products to keep the furniture affixed to the wall.
With these in place, you can purchase boxes and containers to place on the shelves. This mean you can store all your child’s toys, drawing supplies and other items in an organised manner within easy reach when they are needed.
Add Seating
Add a homely touch to the room by adding a sofa or chair to the toddler’s room. It’s a perfect place to read a bedtime story or watch over as they play. Corner chairs would be ideal as they tuck into the perimeter of the room without constricting space.
Don’t be afraid to use throw pillows and blankets to emphasise the cozy touch but remember to have storage space so you can pack them away when you are not in the room.
Shop Around
There are a variety of inexpensive places that offer cheap furniture that can be utilised in your toddler’s room. If you can’t manage a large toy chest, consider looking for old crates and containers. You can add wheels to the bottom that can then be stored underneath your child’s bed when they’re not in use to maximise on storage space.
Child-safe Windows
Window blinds and shades with long cords are major choking hazards, so you should avoid them at all costs. There are a variety of attractive cordless shades on the market, or you could opt for curtains or drapes. Make sure they are mounted to a rail on the wall rather than a curtain rod which could become unhinged if pulled from a child’s height.
